Removal of Tyres

*TYRE COLLECTION PROJECT*

There are a number of vehicle tyres dumped on the bottom of the reef slope
near Eel Garden. They pose a threat to marine life as toxins gradually leach
out and contaminate the food chain. Permission was obtained from the
National Parks for work to take place and a dive was planned with the advice
of a marine biologist. Volunteer Rangers * *carried out a dive on 18th
December
to remove the tyres from the vicinity of the reef and bring them to
collection points on the sandy bottom ready for removal. A total of 42 tyres
were collected. Complete removal from the water will take place at a later
stage. We need a boat for the final removal phase. Please let us know if you
are able to help with this.
