Net removal tour
Many people think that fishing on the reef with a net is completely forbidden. It is actually allowed for the Bedouin families to fish for their own consumption following their traditions, but is indeed forbidden for everybody else.
Unfortunately, probably because of rough weather and difficult conditions on the reef, nets get stuck and eventually abandoned if they cannot be easily removed. Jenny Linnell and Bert van der Togt, two Volunteer Rangers, organised the removal of four discarded nets. Some of them had dead individuals stuck in them, including a young turtle, which shows the importance of removing those nets as soon as possible. The nets were successfully removed, after a few hours of careful removal, making sure not to do any further damage on the reef. On another occasion, thanks to a group of divers, a baby turtle stuck in an active fishing net was saved from a certain death.
